Uloop Morning Scoop: Anthem Protests, Sad College Football Fans and Tufts Professor Says 'Chill Out, People'

By Uloop Staff on September 25, 2017

Monday you got here way too quick. At least it’s officially fall and we hope it feels like it on your campus. Either way, here’s the Uloop Morning Scoop, the knowledge you need to face Monday:

NFL players protest National Anthem in response to Trump comments

Trump criticized NFL players on Friday saying he wished players who protested the National Anthem would be released and encouraged offended fans to walk out of stadiums.

ESPN reports, “Several players and coaches reacted strongly to Trump on social media, and in terms of protests, the NFL is expecting a ‘mixed bag today, on a team-by-team basis,’ a senior NFL official told ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio on Sunday.”

In the third week of these protests, players and even entire teams took a knee or were absent during the National Anthem.

TODAY IN A TWEET

You can still be hurting on Monday from what happened on Saturday. And we don’t just mean that burrito you ate at 3am.

This tweet containing a sad, lonely Vanderbilt fan pretty much sums up how a lot of fans are feeling. Not only did Alabama stomp previously undefeated Vandy 59-0, Penn State broke Iowa fans hearts by scoring on the last play.

See more sad fans here and here.

TUFTS PROFESSORS TELLS EVERYONE TO ‘STOP FREAKING OUT ABOUT COLLEGE STUDENTS’

How do today’s college students feel about free speech? Depends on who you ask…(Image: Uloop News file photo/Pexels)

The Brookings Institution published the results of a survey last week on college students views on free speech. One main conclusion was “A surprisingly large fraction of students believe it is acceptable to act—including resorting to violence—to shut down expression they consider offensive.”

Tufts professor Daniel Drezner wrote in a Washington Post opinion piece:

the study got a lot of traction in the mainstream media. My Post colleague Catherine Rampell described the results as “disturbing.” Eliot Cohen described the findings as “scary stuff.” Commentary’s Noah Rothman was more apocalyptic, warning, “America is lurching toward a civic crisis…. Subtly or overtly, the message is the same: Violence is coming.” The Wall Street Journal editorialized that “college students are clueless about free speech.” James Surowiecki bemoaned the fact that, “Young liberals have totally lost the plot when it comes to free speech.”

Drezner doesn’t quite see the results that way and asks everyone to calm down. Read his whole argument here.

AND FINALLY, AN NYU STUDENT PONDERS ‘DOTARD vs. ROCKET man’

The war of words between Kim Jong Un and President Trump has escalated (Image: YouTube screenshot/CGTN)

NYU‘s Morgan Phillips spent some time thinking about President Trump’s visit to the UN last week and just what his war of words — he called North Korea’s Kim Jong Un “Rocket Man,” while Un called Trump a “dotard” — really means.

“All in all,” Morgan writes, “we can only sit back and find amusement in The Dotard’s and Rocketman’s retorts, hoping that fighting fire with fire will be enough, and the reputation of irrationality of both leaders will be just enough to keep both sides on the defensive so that we do not surpass the brink of extinction.”
